In 2010, a German NGO led by filmmaker Marcus Vetter arrived with German government funding to restore the city\u2019s abandoned cinema, presenting the project as cultural solidarity. Alex Bakri worked on the film documenting the reconstruction, which became Cinema Jenin (2012), celebrating the European-led effort to \u201csave\u201d Palestinian culture\u2014an expression of the white-saviour complex.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But within two years of footage was another film.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bakri encountered Hussein Darby, a projectionist with over 40 years of experience and a deep passion for cinema and its technology. Yet the man who knew the theatre best was repeatedly patronised and treated like an apprentice by the Europeans supposedly there to save it.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Habibi Hussein<\/strong> turns the camera back on the \u201chelpers,\u201d exposing the colonial hierarchy: Europeans decide; Palestinians receive. Hussein\u2019s knowledge, labour and love for cinema become acts of cultural reclamation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinema Jenin is gone. Hussein\u2019s story remains.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">_________________________________________<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenin, eine pal\u00e4stinensische Stadt mit fast 50.000 Einwohnern, war in den vergangenen Jahren wiederholt israelischen Milit\u00e4roffensiven ausgesetzt. Im Jahr 2010 kam eine deutsche NGO unter der Leitung des Filmemachers Marcus Vetter mit finanzieller Unterst\u00fctzung der deutschen Regierung nach Jenin, um das verlassene Kino der Stadt wiederherzustellen, und pr\u00e4sentierte das Projekt als kulturelle Solidarit\u00e4t. Alex Bakri arbeitete an dem Film, der den Wiederaufbau dokumentierte und zu <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinema Jenin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2012) wurde, wobei die europ\u00e4isch gef\u00fchrte Initiative zur \u201eRettung\u201c der pal\u00e4stinensischen Kultur gefeiert wurde \u2013 ein Ausdruck des White-Saviour-Komplexes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doch in zwei Jahren Filmmaterial verbarg sich ein weiterer Film.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bakri begegnete Hussein Darby, einem Filmvorf\u00fchrer mit \u00fcber 40 Jahren Erfahrung und einer tiefen Leidenschaft f\u00fcr das Kino und seine Technik. Doch der Mann, der das Theater am besten kannte, wurde von den Europ\u00e4ern, die angeblich gekommen waren, um es zu retten, wiederholt bevormundet und wie ein Lehrling behandelt.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><strong><i>Habibi Hussein<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> richtet die Kamera auf die \u201eHelfer\u201c zur\u00fcck und legt die koloniale Hierarchie offen: Europ\u00e4er entscheiden; Pal\u00e4stinenser empfangen. Husseins Wissen, Arbeit und Liebe zum Kino werden zu Akten kultureller R\u00fcckaneignung.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinema Jenin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ist verschwunden.
