Restricted Movement 

To step outside of language is impossible, as Jacques Derrida famously put it. To step outside a system, unthinkable then? Across these four films, movement takes shape within structures already in place. A family dances through the architecture of their home, women claim an hour at the Super Afghan Gym, photographs form a continuous shot reverse shot between observer and observed (who is who?), while staying at a party becomes a matter of interpretation.

Bodies and actions are choreographed, observed, restricted and put on record, until meaning seems to emerge between what happens and how it is catalogued. As if everything would make more sense once properly documented, deciphered, taken apart. Look more closely, though, and the systems themselves begin to appear strange, sometimes outright absurd. And within that absurdity, there is a surprising amount of joy. When in doubt: lift some weights, share some food, have a laugh.
